NEW EU packaging regulations on glass jars

From July 1 2008, new European packaging regulations come into force which will affect glass jars with metal lids.

Glass jars with metal lids have a mechanism to ensure tight closure and easy opening, which contain a gasket of soft PVC with a plasticizer, usually Epoxidised Soy Bean Oil (ESBO).

Migration from these lids has repeatedly been an issue of concern, with countries such as Switzerland requiring a lower level of ESBO than the European maximum; a requirement that has lead to the de-listing of several UK products in Switzerland.

From July 1 2008, a lower threshold value for ESBO will apply accross the EU. The threshold value will be 60 mg/kg instead of 300 mg/kg. Producers whose packaging includes glass jars are strongly advised to speak to their packaging supplier to ensure complience with the Directive.
